Not Quite 100%

It’s been 3 weeks since I hurt my knee. I wasn’t training hardcore or competing in a race. It was a leisurely, hot Sunday afternoon and for the first time in a few months, we decided to go and play Ultimate Frisbee.

My left knee (and left leg, in general) has been weak since about three years ago when I had a pretty bad skiing accident. Long story short, it was healed up completely (I think) but apparently, was still in a weakened state.
It had been raining earlier so the grass was pretty much perfect for slipping. A combination of wet grass, running shoes (read = zero traction on wet grass), a weak left leg, and twisting around to try and catch a pass, caused me to be in A LOT of pain, especially that first week. I went to the doctor right away (it was swollen so bad I couldn’t bend my entire left leg) and after some x-rays, the good news was that nothing was torn. The bad news is never knowing exactly what was wrong with my knee.

I have a race in 12 days. Before the Frisbee incident, I was already registered for the race so there was no turning back. Not unless I tore something, which I didn’t. Did I mention I’m stubborn?

Tonight, I unsuccessfully tried running. I was good for the first 2 minutes and then the pain started. Last week, after biking for 45 minutes, I tried jogging and could only last about 5 minutes before the pain kicked in. Swimming and biking is no problem. Thankfully, about 2.5 weeks after the incident, I had full mobility of my knee again and was able to start swimming and biking.

I’ve biked 20 miles and felt fine afterward. I’ve swam a mile and been fine. I’ve run 5 minutes and been in pain. Even if I have to walk the running part of my race, I will finish the race! Then it will be time to start all over again with self-physical therapy on my knee.
