Surgery Update: 60 days

I can’t believe 2 months have already gone by since my surgery. Last time, I couldn’t quite make it all the way around the bike and was still having a lot of discomfort. Between then and now, I’ve learned a lot from my therapist including knowing the difference between an active bend (letting my leg do all the work) and a passive bend (pulling up my leg and forcing it to bend). I’ve learned that I really need to make myself cry in order to make any headway on reaching my weekly goals – I’m way too soft on myself! Also, I was basically being a baby when it came to walking around. As my therapist pointed out, I was limping and favoring my good leg. Yes, I still have a long way to go but it feels good to be making progress!

  • 5 weeks:  119 degrees (active), 122 degrees (passive); also, went all the way around the bike for the first time!
  • 6 weeks:  124 degrees / 128 degrees; got cleared to start swimming again (no side movements with knee yet)
  • 7 weeks:  126 / 130
  • 8 weeks: 136 / 139
Also, I went for my follow-up with the doctor around 5 weeks. They drained some fluid (yay, sweet relief!) and told me I was doing good. They have me scheduled to come back around 12 weeks post-surgery and until then, I’m still prescribed to therapy 3x per week.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a post without a few pictures. Here are some taken early in week 7.
Below is my active bend. My good leg (right) is bent as far back against my bottom as it can go. As you can see, I’m not far from catching up with my left leg (surgery knee). That is awesome!
A few more views of my leg bend and overall comparison.

This is so fascinating to me! I am also a runner and am having some knee discomfort so your story appeals to me… I just popped in from your comment on Amanda's blog- I already like your blog as I scroll through!! Nice to “meet” you!
