this is why i run: minimal equipment // day 4

All I really need to run (besides the obvious clothes) are a good pair of running shoes. Sure, there are plenty of nice-to-have items such as a fancy GPS watch or a color coordinated Dri Fit running outfit but at the end of the day, all I need are shoes. 
In 2006, I started taking running seriously. I love that I could just lace on some shoes and hit the pavement. It was love (with running) at first sight for this poor college student! I remember using a pair of Nike shoes and after a few weeks of running, my knees started hurting…and then one of my toenails turned black and fell off. (Sorry, that’s gross.) Very quickly, I came to the realization that instead of buying fancy running shorts or a GPS watch, I just needed to invest in a good pair of running shoes. After a trip to my local running store, they did a gait analysis and properly fitted me with a pair of shoes. Within days, my knees and feet started feeling normal again. 
To this day, I continue investing in good shoes and still have my $10 stopwatch from Target I bought back in 2006. There isn’t another sport which requires such minimal equipment as there is with running. (Tennis or swimming are a close second.)
This is why I run.
